What to do in the case of an accident?

If you have been injured as a result of an accident, whether it was a car accident18-wheeler accident, or a slip and fall at the grocery store, there are certain things you want to do to ensure your rights are fully protected.

First, you want to be sure to always report your accident.  Oftentimes, after an accident, you do not feel any immediate pain or discomfort so there is a tendency to not report.  This is a mistake.  No matter how big or small, always report your accident to the proper authorities.  If it is a car or trucking accident, be sure to call the police.  If you slipped and fell at the grocery store, always ask to speak to the manager or owner to complete the necessary incident reports.  After completing the incident report, always ask for a copy.  If, however, you were involved in an accident but failed to immediately report it, be sure to report it as soon as possible and provide information as to the accident and your injuries.

Next, it is important to always immediately seek medical attention.  Injuries sustained as a result of an accident rarely go away, and in most cases, mature in their severity.  As such, it is always important to seek emergency medical treatment immediately after the accident, and follow-up with your regular family doctor after your emergency discharge.  It is important when seeking medical attention that you communicate to your physicians how your injuries occurred.  That is, be sure to explain that the injuries were a result of a car accident, slip and fall, etc.

Lastly, it is important not to sign anything without first consulting with an attorney.  In the cases of catastrophic injuries, many insurance companies and corporate defendants will try to get you to sign a release shortly after the accident in exchange for a few bucks.  While many people think they can successfully negotiate with the defendant’s insurance company without the assistance of an attorney, they do so at their own peril.  Insurance companies and large corporations do not look out for your best interests—they look out for their own.
